The year was 2015, and we were approaching Christmas time. Everyone was in the holiday spirit. My parents had informed us that we’ll be having our extended family over at our house. Normally we usually go  visit them.  Knowing we will be having a full house, Mom started making preparations, and I suggested for the cooking to be outsourced to a local caterer. I wanted us to have time to bond. We haven’t seen each other in ages because we all lived and worked in different cities.

Christmas Day

The caterers served an array of different dishes. Jollof rice, amala and ewedu and then pounded yam and egusi soup. I requested for jollof rice, my grandparents were served pounded yam and egusi, some relatives from the village requested for amala and ewedu.

The food was too salty and very soggy and everyone had a look of  displeasure. My grandparents  couldn’t continue the food, Mom felt so disappointed, I mean the food was much, how will plenty food just go to the waste-bin like that! No! We had anticipated Christmas food, but here we are battling with salt.

My mom could not hide her disappointment anymore  and she asked the cook how much salt the cook used. Turns out they didn’t even measure it, they just added salt as “the spirit led them”, and the spirit led us all to a salty Christmas!

Well, food has disappointed us, we all looked forward to enjoying the cake for dessert. But the cake too was a sorry experience. The cake felt like we were drinking dry gin, the baker apparently used so much preservative. The cake was also hard! I mean hard! Who eats a hard cake? The beauty of a cake is in its texture, how fluffy it is, but this one felt like we were eating three days’ bread! That Christmas was a rather unpleasant one.We had to recook the already soggy rice, added water, and tried to drain the salt. Mom cooked another meal for my grandparents.
