How to Make the Perfect Melon Peppersoup

Egusi pepper soup which is also called Melon pepper soup is a popular Nigerian delicacy that is particularly common among the people of Niger-Delta.  It is basically pepper soup that has been infused with Egusi (melon seeds) which makes it quite remarkable.

Like most Pepper soup dishes, there are no hard and fast rules with regards to the choice of proteins used however there is a particular preference for Catfish in this delicious dish.

Ingredients
1/2 Cup Ground Egusi (Melon Seeds)

Assorted Meats 

2-3 Medium Pieces smoked catfish

1 cup periwinkle (Optional)

2-3 Tablespoon Ground Pepper ( Ata gungun)

1 Small Onion Chopped

2 tablespoons pepper soup spice 

1 Tablespoon Ground Crayfish

Your preferred seasoning cubes

Salt to Taste

 

Cooking Instructions

Gather your ingredients and set aside, mix your ground Egusi with some water till you get a semi thick consistency.

Wash your meat properly and add to a cooking pot, along with your seasoning cubes, some salt and onions. Steam for 10 minutes.

Add the pepper soup mix, ground crayfish and more water to the pot. Cover and cook till the meat is almost tender.

Add your dry fish, periwinkle, ground pepper and egusi and cook till the fish is done. (you can add more water if need be).

Taste for salt and seasoning and adjust to suit your taste. Allow it simmer for about 3mins. 

Turn off heat and serve with any swallow of your choice.
